What is gastroscopy?
Performed on an outpatient basis, gastroscopy is a minimally invasive medical examination of the upper part of your digestive tract (esophagus, stomach and duodenum). During the procedure, the doctor introduces an endoscope, a thin and long tube fitted at its end with a tiny light and a mini-camera, into your mouth in order to examine your digestive tract. As the probe passes through the digestive tract, the camera sends the video images to a monitor, and the doctor can assess the condition of the lining of the digestive tract. During the procedure, it is also possible to:
– take samples of the observed tissue (biopsy)
– removing polyps and stopping bleeding from an ulcer as needed
How do I prepare for the gastroscopy?
During your visit, the doctor will ask you several questions about the state of your health, possible allergies, and the medication you are taking. The doctor will then explain how you need to prepare for the procedure. You must follow the doctor’s directions before the procedure. Preparation for gastroscopy is an important step in the success of the procedure.
How is endoscopy performed?
You will be asked to lie down on a stretcher on your left side. You will be given a sedative or pain reliever. This will help you relax during the procedure. You will be in a semi-awake state but you will still be able to interact with the doctor. Before the procedure, the doctor or nurse will spray your throat to freeze it. Then, the doctor will insert the endoscope tube into your mouth and slide it slowly, gently, and further into the digestive tract. It is important at this stage to tell the doctor about any discomfort you feel.
Can I go home after the endoscopy?
Yes, you can go home soon after the procedure, but only after spending some time in a recovery room, where your blood pressure and heart rate will be checked regularly. When the sedation has worn off, you can then leave the clinic. You will probably feel drowsy and tired, but this sensation will wear off over time. This is why you will need to ask someone to drive you home after the procedure.
What is an endoscopic video capsule?
Your doctor may prescribe you an endoscopic video capsule. It is a video capsule as big as a pill, with a tiny camera. When you swallow the capsule, the camera films as it passes inside the digestive tract and transmits the images to a recorder which you wear on your belt. The capsule and the camera will be eliminated in the stool. The exam is used to report on the condition of the digestive system as a whole looking for abnormalities, anemia, diarrhea or any other medical condition.
