At UnionMD, our psychologist in Montreal offer consultations in the form of individual psychotherapy. It is through her open and respectful dialogue, appropriate support needed for everyone to develop self-esteem, encouraging a proactive attitude and approach, that she’s helping you understand and manage emotional and complex mechanisms, and to acquire the tools so that you finally find your personal balance and a happy lifestyle.
What does the psychologist do?
The psychologist is an healthcare professional member of the Ordre des psychologues du Québec (OPQ), which studies, evaluates and identifies the various problems that can influence personal and professional life.
By helping people understand, explain and change their behavior, the psychologist helps to resolve the emotional and relational conflicts that affect them, in order to restore a psychological balance and regain well-being and fulfillment.
What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?
A psychiatrist is a healthcare professional specialized in psychiatry. He is a doctor and is the only one in his category to be empowered to prescribe medication for mental disorders.
This specialist is primarily prepared to treat and diagnose severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, manic-depression or other psychoses of different types. Although some of them expand their practice to certain psychotherapy follow-ups for their patients, this is not their main skill and they will rather work in collaboration with psychologists.
The psychologist-psychotherapist holds at least a master’s degree in psychology, and a specialization of 3 to 5 additional years in a particular approach. He is therefore more empowered to intervene on psychological problems such as depressive, relational or personality disorders and to allow a change of behavior and personality structure.
Should I get a referral from a doctor?
It is not necessary to have a referral from a doctor to consult our psychologist in Montreal. She will be happy to help you in your approach to identify the sources of your discomfort and to accompany you in a therapeutic approach adapted to your needs. If she considers that medication support would be helpful, she may suggest a medical consultation and refer you to the appropriate resource.
