What is endocrinology?
Endocrinology is the science that studies the different types of endocrine glands in the human body. By endocrine, we talk about the glands whose secretions (hormones) pour into the blood. The most important ones are the thyroid, the adrenal glands, the pancreas, the gonads (testicles and ovaries), the parathyroids and the pituitary gland.
These glands are influenced by several external factors, such as stress, nutrition, sleep or light. There is therefore a link and a balance that is created between our hormonal system and our environment. It is this balance that keeps us healthy.
Given the complexity of the hormonal system, endocrinology occurs at many levels. It affects all the functions of the body. In particular, nutrition and digestion, like hormones such as insulin and glucagon, which regulate blood glucose, leptin which acts on the fat reserves or ghrelin and PYY-36 which are responsible for regulating our appetite, reproduction, such as puberty, pregnancy or menstrual cycles, as well as dermatology or even growth.
What does the endocrinologist do?
Endocrinologists are medical specialists who evaluate, treat and monitor patients with various endocrine diseases such as diabetes, obesity, lipid diseases, thyroid and adrenal glands. He is particularly interested in diseases related to a disorder in the functioning of these glands.
A consultation for an evaluation assessment, completed by laboratory tests or imaging, will allow the endocrinology specialist to make a proper diagnosis and prescribe the medication necessary to manage your problem adequately.
